Digital Infrastructure

West Sussex councils have an exciting ambition to put the county on the map as a key location for digital investment, innovation and expansion.

We want commercial suppliers to see our county as ripe for their investment, leading to increased digital infrastructure that will support gigabit-capable broadband and future technologies.

We are encouraging greater coverage of gigabit-capable full fibre connectivity to support our economy to attract and retain businesses and allow new businesses to develop, as well as to give our residents high quality digital opportunities. We also want technology to support our public services to be more resilient and at less risk of delay or disruption caused by slow or poor connectivity.

Full fibre broadband is the next generation of digital infrastructure, capable of delivering unlimited speeds in both directions in excess of 1Gbps (1,000Mbps) using pure optical fibre.

Government is pushing for greater coverage of full fibre broadband across the UK by 2033, and that no communities are ‘left behind’. Therefore a key challenge is to extend coverage and consumer choice of digital services across rural areas of our county, to support and benefit SMEs and home-based businesses.

No single approach or model will delivery full fibre to all of the county, the solutions will be bold and innovative. We are engaging with industry suppliers and central government to identify and respond to new opportunities to increase investment in furthering our exciting digital ambitions.
