Gigabit Broadband for Businesses Scheme

Welcome to the future!

Optical fibre-based broadband is here now and getting ready for a gigabit speed is a key step for most businesses.

A national Gigabit Broadband Voucher scheme provides help for small and medium enterprise businesses* to get a gigabit-capable broadband connection. Vouchers are available now. Businesses can claim up to £2,500 against the cost of connection either individually or as part of a group project**.

One gigabit is the same as 1,000 megabits – so it’s a big leap forward in connection speeds that could benefit you and your business into the future.

Why go gigabit?

Revolutionise how you communicate and use video conferencing to build new business contacts around the world, reducing travel and saving you money.

Take advantage of cutting edge software and applications that can help you be more flexible about when and where you work.

Make the best use of Cloud Business Applications such as file back-ups, real time collaboration, instant messaging and security features. Upload and download massive data files in a matter of seconds and web stream live content in a flash.

Improve your business’s resilience by minimising the risk of connectivity failure and associated time and money costs.

Shape up your business to deal with ever increasing demands for internet speeds and connectivity.

*An SME has up to 249 Employees and a balance sheet of less than €43 million or a turn-over of less than €50 million.

**The rules for a group project are in transition until the 6th January 2019 the rate per business for an aggregate group project remains at up to £3000 per business it will then drop to £2500.  A group project is where one or more businesses group together with a supplier to deliver the connection

How the scheme works

Firstly, it’s not a voucher scheme. You don’t apply for a code or discount that you can then use to buy a gigabit broadband service.

Instead you request a gigabit-capable broadband connection from an internet service provider that is registered on the scheme run by DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport).  You do not have to sign up to a gigabit service in fact all you have to sign up for is double your current speed or 100Mbps service whichever is the greater.

If the provider can offer you the service and the gigabit–capable connection you request, they will confirm this with DCMS, who in turn will confirm it with you. Once your provider has connected your business with gigabit-capable broadband DCMS will make a payment on your behalf to the supplier which reflects discounted connection costs up to £2,500.

Secondly, it’s not just a scheme for businesses. Residents can benefit too. Where a cluster of residents can form around one or more businesses it is possible for an additional discount of £500 per home to be deducted from the overall connection costs - just as long as the total value discounted by homes does not exceed the total value discounted by businesses.
