Sussex Downs & Coastal Plain Local Action Group

The Sussex Downs & Coastal Plain Local Action Group area includes the designated rural areas of Arun District, Chichester District and Hayling Island and is home to approximately 106,000 people. The area is recognised for its outstanding landscape and environment with more than 70% covered by the South Downs National Park and the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is also a working landscape with around 5,900 businesses and 30,000 jobs.

 

Sussex Downs & Coastal Plain Local Action Group

The Local Action Group is made up of local volunteers from across the private, public and community sectors, who have a wide range of experience and knowledge of the area and its economy. There are currently 22 members. The Chairman is Mike de Lara and the Vice Chairman is Cllr Norman Dingemans. The members meet as a group four times a year and additional Project Selection Panels may be held as required.

West Sussex County Council is the accountable body for the Local Action Group and employs the LEADER Delivery Team .

During 2014 the Local Action Group consulted with businesses and communities to produce the Sussex Downs & Coastal Plain Local Development Strategy. The strategy was the basis of the bid to the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs which successfully secured €1,865,000 of LEADER funding for 2015-2020.

 

Sussex Downs & Coastal Plain Local Action Group Priorities

The Local Action Group will use its LEADER funding to achieve a more resilient, productive and innovative rural economy, which celebrates our valuable landscape and natural assets. To be considered for funding a LEADER project must address at least one or more of the following:

Priority 1 Small rural enterprises that thrive and grow:

1.1     delivering products that benefit local communities and visitors; and

1.2      creating a range of quality local employment/self employment opportunities.

Priority 2 A resilient land based sector, which:

2.1      takes advantage of diverse income streams;

2.2      makes good use of innovation to manage resources and costs and exploit growth opportunities;

2.3      makes the best use of natural capital and unlocks its potential.

Priority 3: A robust year round visitor economy, which:

3.1      celebrates the area’s landscape, environment and heritage.

Priority 4: An innovative service infrastructure, which:

4.1      addresses the un-met needs of local people and supports communities.
